eLearning

eLearning (electronic learning) is a Community initiative aiming at motivating education and training agents as well as the interested social, industrial and financial agents. Its objective is to deal with the lack of skills connected with new technologies and to ensure better social inclusion. This initiative responds to the targets defined by the European Council in Lisbon so that Europe can overcome this delay and accelerate the establishment of the society of knowledge. The eLearning initiative is included in the framework of the general action plan, eEurope, for the period 2000-2003.

The initiative includes four basic elements:

• Efforts to equip every institution associated with learning with multimedia computers as well as to facilitate connection and improvement of access to the INTERNET.
• Efforts to train teachers and tutors so that they can incorporate these tools in their pedagogic practices.
• Development of qualitative European educational services of multimedia content.
• Acceleration of the process of creating networks in training and educational institutions.
