Academic recognition
Academic recognition consists in the acceptance by one member state, either entirely or in part, of a degree issued in another member state. The aim is to allow the degree holder to continue the whole or part of his/her education/training beyond national borders (the same applies for the recognition of a period of studies). Sometimes it is difficult to achieve academic recognition due to the different educational and training systems and the differences existing in the duration, the level and the content of education/training provided.
In order to overcome these obstacles, the European Community has instituted different tools aiming at strengthening the transfer of skills and abilities, such as the European Credit Transfer System “ECTS”, the EUROPASS- Training for the promotion of European pathways in work-linked training, the common European Curriculum Vitae. Moreover, Naric network has been defined as the European network for the academic recognition of degrees and periods of study.
In Greece the competent agencies for the recognition of degrees issued by foreign institutions are the following: the Inter-University Foreign Degree Recognition Centre
(DIKATSA) for university degrees, the Institute of Technological Education (ITE) for Higher Technological Education, the Organization for Vocational and Educational Training (OEEK) for secondary technical vocational training and the Directorate of Intercultural Education of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs for primary and secondary education.
