Tools of academic recognition

  • NARIC (Network of National Academic Recognitiion Information Centres)

  • Naric Network is the European network for the academic recognition of degrees and periods of study in the framework of the member states of the European Union, of the countries of the European Free Trade Association and the cooperating countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It consists of the national centres of the relevant countries with the aim of providing information and advice on issues of recognizing degrees and periods of studies in other countries. The activities of the Network are coordinated by the European Commission and supported by the Socrates programme. The national centre of Greece is the Inter-University Foreign Degree Recognition Center (DIKATSA).

  • ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)

  • The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is the European system of measuring and transferring academic credits. It is a system of recognising university periods of studies of another country aiming at the mutual recognition of degrees between the cooperating educational institutions due to the transparency of the programmes of studies. A basic tool of transparency is the ‘credits ECTS’ regarding numeric values from 1 to 60 allocated to course units to describe the student’s workload required to complete them in relation to the total quantity of work required to complete a full year of academic studies represented by 60 credits.

  • EUROPASS - Training

  • The initiative Europass-Training concerns the promotion of European work-linked training, that means periods of vocational training in another member state other than the member state where the person followed his/her training. Necessary requirement is the organization providing the training and the host organization in the other member state to have concluded a partnership agreement and to agree on the content, the targets, the duration and the continuation of the European training period.

The organization of the country of origin issues the European training record (Europass), a community information document -a passport certifying the achievements of the European training period and specifying its content in the languages of the partner organizations. Europass has been issued since the 1st January 2000 by the competent body for the organization of the vocational training at a national level. In Greece the competent body is the Organization for Vocational Education and Training (OEEK).

  • European Curriculum Vitae

  • The European Curriculum Vitae is an optional tool for every citizen who wishes to study or work in another member state. It aims at helping every candidate who is going to use it to better describe his/her academic and professional qualifications as well as to facilitate educational and training institutions and employers to assess knowledge acquired and the abilities of the candidate.

The European Curriculum Vitae uses a standard form to provide personal information, professional experience, acquired training and education as well as the individual’s skills and abilities. Reference to additional information (e.g. publications) that the candidate believes should be mentioned is suggested. For the facilitation of the candidate there are specific guidelines for the completion of the European Curriculum Vitae.

The European CV model with the relevant guidelines is available in electronic format in 13 languages at the website of CEDEFOP.
