Certification of foreign languages skills
Taking into account new social needs for certification of foreign languages skills in society in general, in 2003 the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs began implementing a series of examinations to evaluate and certify knowledge and ability to use modern languages resulting in conferrment of
State Language Skill Certificates.
This system is an effort to come into line with European policy to promote multilingualism and a uniform way of certifying and accrediting knowledge of modern languages. It adopts a series of six levels of linguistic fluency proposed by the Council of Europe:
Á1: Rudimentary knowledge
Á2: Basic knowledge
Â1: Fair knowledge
Â2: Good knowledge
C1: Very good knowledge
C2: Excellent knowledge
During the first years that the system is in operation, it is expected that examinations will be held to certify knowledge of the English, French, German, and Italian languages for which there are University Departments in Greece, while in the future certification of other official languages of the Member States of the European Union, countries neighbouring Greece, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and other languages for which a need for certification arises in Greece, will follow. Moreover, during the first years in operation, the level of language knowledge will be certified for general use, in other words use not linked with a specific professional or academic activity, while later on language certificates will be provided for special uses.
All Greek citizens, Greeks abroad, E.U. citizens and foreigners, resident, being educated or working in Greece and whose normal place of residence is also in Greece, are eligible to participate in the exams.
