Socrates

The Socrates programme is a community programme aiming at promoting the european aspect of education. Its mission is: improvement of education quality, promotion of life-long learning, encouragement of everybody’s access to education and acquisition of recognized qualifications and skills through the cooperation of member states.

It applies to all education levels and finances a series of corporate relations and exchange systems including scholarships’ awarding for studies, teaching, attendance of training courses and acquisition of professional experience abroad. It also provides support to educational foundations for the organization of pedagogical plans and experience exchange, while it supports non-governmental organisations (NGO) in organising activities related to educational affairs.

The Socrates programme has entered its second implementation stage (2000 - 2006) and includes 7 individual actions, out of which the first three are related to the three main education stages (school, higher and adult education). In summary, the individual actions are as follows:

    1. Comenius: School Education
    2. Erasmus: Higher Education
    3. Grundtvig: Adult Education
    4. Lingua: European Languages Learning
    5. Minerva: Information and Communication Technologies in Education / Open and Distance Learning
    6. Observation and Innovation of Educational Policies and Systems
    7. Joint Actions with other European Programmes
The National Coordination Body in our country is the State Scholarships Foundation (IKI).
